In Zaragoza, Spain, FIBA conducted the draw to determine the
preliminary round pools for the 2016 FIBA Men’s U17 World Championship,
and the USA was drawn into Group A, alongside Egypt (FIBA Africa gold
medalist), Turkey (FIBA Europe bronze medalist) and Taiwan (FIBA Asia
bronze medalist). Three-time U17 World Championship gold medalists, the
USA will look to defend its title June 23-July 3 in Zaragoza.
The USA earned its qualifying spot for the 2016 U17 worlds by capturing
gold at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship with a 5-0 record.
2016 QUALIFIED TEAMS (16):
In addition to host Spain, nations qualified for the 2016 FIBA U17
World Championship include: Egypt and Mali from FIBA Africa; Argentina,
Canada, Dominican Republic and the United States from FIBA Americas;
China, South Korea and Taiwan from FIBA Asia; Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Finland, France, Lithuania and Turkey from FIBA Europe; and Australia
from FIBA Oceania.
PRELIMINARY ROUND GROUPS:
Group A: Egypt, Taiwan, Turkey, USA
Group B: Argentina, Lithuania, Mali, Spain
Group C: Australia, Canada, China, Finland
Group D: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dominican Republic, France, South Korea
Training camp to determine the 12-member team will take place June 11-22
at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. The USA will look to defend gold at the 2016 FIBA Men’s U17
World Championship from June 23-July 3 in Zaragoza, Spain.
